The Cyprus Institute has joined AI4LAM as a Founding Member
We are delighted to announce that The Cyprus Institute has joined AI4LAM as a Founding Member. It is a non-profit research and educational institution dedicated to addressing scientific and societal challenges through interdisciplinary research, advanced technologies and international collaboration. Its activities span several fields, including computational sciences, environmental research, archaeology, cultural heritage and digital technologies.

Through its Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), the Cyprus Institute develops and applies innovative digital methodologies for the documentation, analysis, preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage.
Combining expertise from the humanities, natural sciences and computational sciences, STARC promotes research at the intersection of cultural heritage, digital innovation and emerging technologies.
An important component of this work is undertaken by the Andreas Pittas Art Characterization Laboratories (APAC Labs), which integrate advanced scientific imaging, material characterisation, 3D documentation and digital technologies to support the study and conservation of artworks, archaeological objects and heritage monuments. These activities generate rich, multidimensional datasets that create opportunities for AI-assisted analysis, interpretation and knowledge extraction.
The Institute is also advancing AI-enabled approaches to digital cultural heritage management through initiatives such as CHRONOS (Cultural Heritage Repository and Online Networked Open System). The platform supports digital collection management and documentation, incorporating capabilities for AI-assisted image analysis and metadata generation, natural-language collection search, interactive knowledge visualisation and interoperable data sharing. These developments aim to improve the accessibility, discoverability and research potential of cultural heritage collections while supporting the digital transformation of museums, archives and other heritage institutions.
Beyond cultural heritage, the Institute contributes to the development of advanced computational and AI research infrastructures, including initiatives supporting trustworthy AI, high-performance computing and interdisciplinary innovation. Such activities provide opportunities to connect cultural heritage research with broader advances in artificial intelligence and data science.
